THE EARTH IS WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON
Environmental and ethical issues are fundamental to the Essence + Alchemy (E+A) brand, ensuring that products are designed and made with minimal impact on the earth, it's people and it's organisms. Everything that goes into our goods are simple and natural, a plant base + essential oils for scent. There are no synthetic fragrances, no additives, just pure and natural, sustainable raw materials.
We strive to use creative solutions to make a positive impact on the planet, like for example, reducing waste and creating physical refill candles so that our candle containers can be reused time and time again and as the brand grows and product lines expand, the same care will be implemented, here's how:
Boxes, glassware and gold travel tins are made here in the UK, they are all recyclable and more importantly reusable for many uses including E+A candle refills.
Packaging is always minimal and made from recycled cardboard and we only use paper labels. We prefer to use recycled materials and like our packaging to be reused, recycled or composted at the end of it's life. E+A packaging includes cardboard boxes, paper tape, tissue papers, paper and glassine bags which are all recyclable and biodegradable.
All postal boxes are unbranded so they can be easily reused and wherever possible we reuse postal packaging that we have received. When shipping, products are protected only with tissue paper and boxes are sealed with paper tape. We don't use any bubble wrap or fillers.
Eliminating packaging whenever possible. If a product is for travel or in a lidded container, it generally doesn't need any additional outer box packaging unless it's fragile like our apothecary bottles.
We also supply refills to encourage reuse of E+A containers, which in turn minimises our packaging.
We are working to reduce the amount of energy used to produce, transport and sell E+A products to you. We have been doing that by making our processes more energy efficient by using our local post office, switching off equipment when not in use, using low voltage equipment (we even made our own wax melter that runs at 350W). Generating some of our own energy and increasing insulation - the E+A garden laboratory has been heavily insulated to ensure that it is warm in winter and cool in summer, no need for air conditioning or excessive heating equipment.
We work with UK manufacturers and suppliers including glass blowers, tin makers, box makers and essential oil suppliers. It is very important for us to support British manufacturing and businesses because this not only helps support local economy but it also means we cut down on global transportation and unnecessary air/freight miles.
Water is very precious and we are aware that it is a luxury not everyone on the planet shares. We use minimal water only, cleaning equipment at the end of the day. We are working towards collecting and filtering our waste water for use in the E+A garden.
Very little waste is produced during the E+A manufacturing process due to accurate measuring techniques and making in small batches. Residual wax from the candle making process is kept for use as scented wax samples for customers and stockists. These can even be melted on the top of an oil burner as scented wax melts.
We recycle all paper, glass, aluminium and recyclable plastic. Here in Sheffield, non-recyclable waste materials are converted into energy for the city as waste to energy recovery.
We always consider the life cycle of E+A products, in particular their end use - is the container & packaging reusable, recyclable or biodegradable?
We take great care when sourcing raw materials, preferring to use ingredients that are produced in a sustainable way and avoid those that aren't. We will keep on using natural ingredients in our products and choose to work with suppliers that share our values - respecting the earth, the people and organisms living on it.
When sourcing raw materials, they are always sustainable, cruelty-free and as locally sourced as possible, for example candles are handmade from rapeseed, a plant which has been grown in Britain for hundreds of years as animal feed and to protect and improve soils. This natural plant wax is made from the oil of the rapeseed plant. It is sustainable, GMO free, non-hazardous, biodegradable, harmless to wildlife and because it is grown and manufactured here, it has a lower carbon footprint than other imported plant waxes such as soy, coconut and palm wax.
Essential oils are in high demand so we ensure that we only use oils from sustainable and ethical sources and we will continue to work with reputable British suppliers who share our values.
